Introduction
The Bristol Blenheim was a British twin-engined aircraft that served with the Royal Air Force throughout the early years of the Second World War. To achieve its relatively high speed, the Blenheim was designed with a narrow fuselage and a distinctive “stepless” cockpit, in which the upper nose glazing followed a single slope. This left the pilot’s position on the left side of the nose extremely cramped: the control yoke obstructed the flight instruments, while the engine instruments restricted the forward view during landing.
The rapid pace of aircraft development during the late 1930s meant that the Blenheim’s initial speed advantage was short-lived. By the time it entered operational service, newer fighters were already beginning to surpass it in performance. Nevertheless, the design continued to evolve.
During the Munich Crisis of September 1938, the RAF urgently sought a replacement for the ageing Hawker Demon fighter. Trials showed that surplus Blenheim Mk Is could be adapted by fitting an under-fuselage gun pack containing four Browning machine guns. Around 150 aircraft were subsequently converted into the Blenheim IF, creating the fighter variant that would serve alongside the bomber during the Battle of Britain.
The trial installation was evaluated at the Royal Aircraft Establishment before test firing took place at Martlesham Heath. The production conversions were then carried out by Nos. 24 and 27 Maintenance Units. In addition to the four Brownings in the under-fuselage pack, the Blenheim IF retained a single forward-firing Browning and a Vickers K machine gun in its semi-retractable, hydraulically operated dorsal turret.
The improved Blenheim IV was developed to provide greater range and improved crew accommodation. Immediately distinguished by its extended nose, the aircraft also introduced increased armour and more powerful Bristol Mercury XV engines. It entered service with Coastal Command in late 1939 and, by 1940, had replaced the Mk I in most front-line duties. Its long-range fighter conversion, the Blenheim IVF, retained the four-gun pack beneath the fuselage and carried an additional machine gun in the mid-upper turret.
Entry into RAF Service and the Battle of France
The first Blenheim IFs were delivered to No. 25 Squadron at Hawkinge and No. 23 Squadron at Wittering in December 1938. No. 64 Squadron at Church Fenton was fully equipped by the middle of January 1939, followed by No. 29 Squadron at Digby. During January, the London-based Auxiliary Air Force squadrons—Nos. 600, 601, and 604—also began receiving the fighter variant.
When the Second World War began in September 1939, Blenheim bomber squadrons were among the first RAF units to see action, undertaking reconnaissance missions and attacks against German naval targets, while Blenheim IF squadrons assumed responsibility for long-range fighter patrols. Alongside Coastal Command, Fighter Command operated six Blenheim IF squadrons, increasingly employing the aircraft on defensive patrols as it transitioned towards the night-fighter role. The Blenheim nevertheless continued to achieve successes in daylight. On 18 August 1940, Flying Officer Reginald John Peacock of No. 235 Squadron shot down a Junkers Ju 88 to claim his fifth victory, becoming the only pilot to achieve ace status while flying the Blenheim fighter. In total, Blenheim-equipped squadrons claimed 30 victories during the summer and autumn of 1940, while Coastal Command’s Nos. 235, 236, and 248 Squadrons were later recognised as qualifying Battle of Britain units.
The Blenheim as a Night Fighter
The heavy losses suffered by the Blenheim during the Battle of France and the early stages of the Battle of Britain demonstrated that it could no longer compete effectively with modern single-seat fighters in daylight. As a result, Fighter Command increasingly transferred Blenheim IF squadrons to the night-fighter role, where the aircraft’s relatively stable flying characteristics and roomy fuselage made it well suited to carrying the RAF’s new airborne interception (AI) radar. By the summer of 1940, No. 600 Squadron had begun operating radar-equipped Blenheims, while other units continued to refine the tactics and techniques of radar-controlled night interception.
The Blenheim took part in the first major night interception of the war on 18–19 June 1940, when Heinkel He 111s attacked RAF bomber bases in East Anglia. Blenheim IF L8687 of No. 23 Squadron, flown by Sergeant A. C. Close, scored hits on one of the bombers before being struck by return fire.
